South Dakota Medigap Plans, AKA Medicare Supplemental Policies, work as MedSup plans do in most states. We will go over the Medigap rules for the Mount Rushmore State in this Senior65.com article.

South Dakota Medigap Plans are also called Medicare Supplement Insurance policies or just MedSup.

South Dakota Medigap Plans Basics

Medigap, a private health insurance, complements Original Medicare by covering gaps like deductibles and co-payments. Like in most states, Medigap in SD usually covers the 20% of authorized Medicare expenses not paid by Medicare (Parts A and B). This can include hospital bills, doctor fees, lab tests, and more, but excludes prescription drugs. Here is an in depth overview of how Medigap works.

Key Coverage points include:

  1. Medigap Eligibility Criteria: To qualify for Medigap, you must have both Medicare Parts A and B.
  2. Medigap exclusion: If you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C), you can’t enroll in Medigap.
  3. Medigap coverage limitations: Medigap policies only cover an individual; spouses need separate policies but sometimes you can get a discount if
  4. Medigap Deadlines: If you miss your enrollment deadline, insurers may deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. Scroll down to learn when to enroll in Medigap in South Dakota.

When to Enroll in South Dakota MedSup Plans

Most people enroll in Medigap in South Dakota during the 6 month period once they are both over 65 AND enrolled in Medicare Part B. This is called the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) although it is sometimes referred to as your Initial Open Enrollment Period. Enrolling during this period means you will be approved for Medigap regardless of your current health status.

The term “Open Enrollment” can be misleading as it doesn’t happen every year. Medigap Open Enrollment is usually a one-time chance to get Medigap without a medical review. It is not an annual event. If you missed this OEP period, you can still apply for Med Supp but you will usually have to answer health questions before approval. Check out other Medigap enrollment options in our article, “Help! I’ve Missed My Medigap Initial Enrollment Period. What Should I Do?“.
