Some Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage plans will be discontinued, effective December 31, 2013. The states affected are: Wisconsin, Virginia, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire, Missouri, Maine, Kentucky, Indiana, Connecticut, and Colorado.

Anthem Special Enrollment Period

For Anthem members in the plans that will no longer be offered, a Special Election Period* (SEP) is available to choose either a new Medicare Advantage or Medigap plan. This Special Election Period ranges from October 15, 2013 through the last day of February 2014.

*SEP is for one time use only. If a member/beneficiary has already used the SEP, they cannot use it again.

Medigap Choices for Discontinued MA Members

Anthem members of a discontinued Medicare Advantage plan, who choose to enroll in a Medigap plan, will have the option of Medicare Supplement plans A or F in the state where they reside. These plans will offer guaranteed issuance regardless of a preexisting condition.

When to Enroll During Anthem’s SEP

  • Enrollment requests received until December 31, 2013 will have a January 1, 2014 effective date.
  • Enrollment requests received in January will have a February 1, 2014 effective date.
  • Enrollment requests received in February will have a March 1, 2014 effective date.
