Now that you are eligible for Original Medicare you may decide that a Medigap plan is right for you. Here are four tips that will help you to choose the right plan.

1) Get the Most Comprehensive Coverage You Can Afford

Medigap premiums range in price drastically from a basic plan like Medigap Plan A to a comprehensive Plan F. You’ll want to weigh both your monthly premium, your current health, and what it would cost you if you had an emergency or serious illness to decide which of the 10 Medicare Supplement plans are best for you. For instance Plan F adds an additional 365 hospitalization days, covers your Original Medicare deductibles, copays, coinsurance, excess charges, and foreign emergency care.

2) On a Budget? There are Plan F Options

If you want comprehensive coverage there are two options to get that without spending a ton on your Medigap monthly premium.

  • Medigap Select F: Offers the benefits of the comprehensive plan but within a PPO type, local network.
  • Medigap High F: Offers the benefits of the Plan F with a high deductible of $2,140 in 2014

Medigap Select F may not be available in all areas.

3) Gauge Medigap Price Yearly Increases

You don’t want to just look at how much a Medigap plan costs now, you want to look to see how the provider’s monthly premium increase as you age, and at which age it stops increasing your monthly premium.

4) Get a Prescription Drug Plan

Medigap plans do not offer prescription drug coverage. You’ll want to look into a Part D plan that helps lower your prescription drug costs.
