If you want to enroll in Medigap, but have a preexisting condition, you may have a waiting period before Medigap covers your preexisting condition.

Enrolling in Medigap with Preexisting Conditions

First thing you need to know is, if you enroll during your Medigap initial enrollment period you do NOT have to answer medical questions. During this time you will be enrolled regardless of preexisting conditions.

Medigap Preexisting Waiting Period

A company is not allowed to delay your Medigap coverage due to a preexisting condition; however, it can delay covering your preexisting condition for up to 6 months IF you were diagnosed or treated for this preexisting treatment within 6 months prior to enrolling in Medigap. This is called the “preexisting condition waiting period.” If your provider elects to exclude your preexisting condition, after the 6 month delay you will be fully covered.

Medicare Coverage of Preexisting conditions.

Good news is you will still be covered by Original Medicare, regardless of your preexisting condition. So while Medigap won’t fill in the gaps, you’ll still be able to see your doctor, have surgery, or get any type of treatment you need.
