Understanding how to decide between Medigap Plan G companies can save you time and money. Since the law requires all Plan G policies to provide the same core coverage, how do you pick a plan? The real differences usually come down to price, discounts, and the extra perks each company may offer.

Medigap plans are VERY similar no matter the insurance provider

Please read the three points below. Everything you know about comparing insurance when you were under 65, doesn’t apply with Medigap.

1) All Medigap Plan G Policies Cover the Same Benefits

If you’re comparing Medigap G policies, the first thing to know is this: no matter which insurance company you choose, the core coverage is identical. Every Plan G includes the same standardized benefits set by federal law. That means whether you pick Humana, Aetna, or Mutual of Omaha, the payments they make towards your Medicare Part A coinsurance for doctor visits, Part B coinsurance for hospital costs, etc. will be the same. Scroll down to see our chart which shows exactly what Medigap Plan G covers.

2) There is no Medigap Network! All Medigap companies offer same access to doctors

There is no Medigap network. Any doctor that accepts Medicare MUST accept ALL Medigap plans. So no matter which Medigap insurance provider you select, you will have access to the same doctors and facilities. If you here rumor that a doctor doesn’t take a certain insurance, they are NOT talking about Medigap. All doctors and facilities that accept Medicare must work with all Medigap insurance providers.

3) Medigap Insurance Companies are “Silent” and “Secondary” when it comes to your healthcare

At Senior65.com, we call Medigap, “the Silent Secondary payer to Medicare.” Medigap insurance providers are not involved in your health care decisions for services in the U.S. This makes Medigap “silent.” They cannot require a referral, an authorization or a second opinion. They cannot deny claims approved by Medicare. You are not going to be on the phone arguing with a Medigap insurance company about why they didn’t approve your claim.

Medicare calls all the shots when it comes to paying claims so if Medicare pays 80% then your Medigap plan G MUST pay their share (usually 20% after Part B deduct). This makes Medigap “secondary.” You also will not be on the phone with your Medigap insurance company about why they still haven’t paid your claim. Medigap insurance providers ALWAYS pay after Medicare pays their share of the cost. In our 20+ years helping people with Medigap, we have only once instance were a qualified Medigap claim wasn’t paid immediately. It was coded incorrectly and the insurance provider paid it within 45 business days.

Note: While the “Silent and Secondary” rule is true for services in the USA, it doesn’t apply to foreign travel emergency when you are injured abroad.

Wait? Are You Saying all Medigap Plan G companies are the same?

Not exactly. We are saying you will be ready to select the right Medigap G provider, once you first understand that Medigap plans:

  • All have the same core benefits
  • All give you access to exact same doctors and facilities
  • All have no input in your healthcare decisions
  • All always make their secondary payment to Medicare

The differences between Medigap plans come down to price, discounts, and extra perks each company may offer, such as gym memberships, telehealth benefits, or wellness programs.

Should I select the Medigap Plan G Company That Offers the Cheapest Plan?

This is one of the most common questions our clients ask, and here is our honest answer: “kinda, sorta yes.” It feels weird selecting the low cost leader when it comes to your health but the best approach is usually to go with the Medigap company that offers the lowest price today factoring in discounts and perks.

As we’ve mentioned throughout this article, Medigap plans are standardized, which means every company provides the exact same core benefits and the same access to doctors. If your doctor accepts Medicare, they must accept your new Medigap plan, no matter which company you choose.

Even if you’ve had amazing—or not-so-great—service from an insurance provider in the past, it won’t affect your Medigap experience. Medigap acts as a secondary payer to Medicare, so the company mostly follows Medicare’s lead on approvals and payments. All Medigap plans general service is the same

Does Insurance Company Customer Service and Reputation Matter

Not really. Since insurance companies aren’t involved in any of US based medical coverage decisions and they always pay their claims, it is hard for insurance providers to stand out with amazing customer service.

Plus if you enroll through our Senior65.com site or over the phone at 800-930-7956, we will be listed as your agent at no additional cost to you. So if you need assistance you can just pick up the phone and call us. We pride ourselves on amazing service.

Some will argue that you should pick a plan that has a good reputation for not increasing rates in the future. We did too until we saw nearly every insurance provider raise their Medigap rates significantly towards the end of the Covid 19 pandemic. We don’t think paying more for a Medigap plan in the hope it will not increase rates as fast as their peers is a good strategy. We say go with the lowest price plan form an insurance provider that you are somewhat familiar with.

Should I go with an “No-Name” Medigap Plan G company

Maybe. You may hear that relatively unknown regional insurance company is offering a Medigap G plan at a great rate. Should you go with them? The coverage, access to doctors, and customer service should be the same as the larger national insurance providers that we feature on our Medigap quote site. The main concern is will they still be competitively offering Medigap in the foreseeable future. If you are concerned about their long term viability, you may want to go with a more recognizable plan since growing a healthy membership base is usually the best way to keep prices down. So while all doctors that accept Medicare MUST take all Medigap plans, some of these smaller insurance players just cannot compete over time.
