California Medigap Guaranteed Issuance Policy

2 Extra ways to enroll after your initial enrollment period

by Amy De Vore+ on Aug 08, 2014 | 1 Comment

In California there are two more ways to enroll in a Medigap plan without having to endure a waiting period or a health screening after your initial enrollment period ends. This is on top of the 7 ways to enroll in Medigap per the federal government for guaranteed issuance.

1) Medicare Advantage Ends Coverage in Your Area

If your Medicare Advantage plan ends coverage in your area you may enroll in a Medigap plan. However you must apply within 123 days after your Medicare Advantage plan ends.

2) CA Medigap Birthday Rule

In California, you may switch your current Medigap plan every year during the 30-day period that follows your birthday. You are able to switch companies, but you are only allowed to choose a plan that has equal or lesser benefits than your current plan. So you can switch from Plan A to Plan A, but not to Plan F. If you have a plan that is no longer sold you can replace your current with specific plans.

From what I understand from this article, is that even though I can switch my Medigap policy each year, I should enroll when I'm first eligible into a plan that offers the most coverage because I may not be able to switch to that one later on. Is this correct?

Bingo! You go it. You'll want to choose a Medigap plan that offers the most coverage when you are first eligible.
