While every Medicare Supplemental Plan is standardized, a few insurance companies offer the Silver Sneakers program to help Medicare-eligible seniors improve their health. You might want to consider this program before choosing between Medigap plans because not every plan offers Silver Sneakers.

This article was updated on Feb 2020 to reflect new information

What is the Silver Sneakers Program?

The Silver Sneakers program consists on a free or discounted gym membership for seniors. Silver Sneakers works at private gyms such as Golds Gym or the YMCA. Gym participation in Silver Sneakers vary by county.

Search Plans that offer Sliver Sneakers

Why Take Advantage of Silver Sneakers?

The Silver Sneakers program has both physical and emotional effects. You can lower cholesterol, blood pressure, lessen the side effects of diabetes, and have more energy just by walking 30 minutes a day. Working out can improve mental health by lowering depression and loneliness while meeting new people.

According to Pychs Central, researchers at the University of Chicago have found: “the impact of loneliness on premature death is nearly as strong as the impact of disadvantaged socioeconomic status, which they found increases the chances of dying early by 19%”

Can’t Get to the Gym? No Problem

Silver Steps is a program for seniors who live 15 miles or further from a gym. It is a personalized workout program that includes a kit with how-to DVDs, resistance belts, and an exercise video. So you won’t be left out if you live in a rural area. Silver Sneakers also offers an online component to help with nutrition, streaming exercises, and a forum to talk to other members.

Which Plans Offer Silver Sneakers?

Remember most plans do not offer Silver Sneakers. Check out our Silver Sneakers Search tool to see if there are any in your area. You can see which Medigap plans participate in Silver Sneakers and can get quotes and apply directly.

My husband's company is changing to Blue Cross Blue Shield. I believe that my husband, age 67 will be eligible for Silver Sneakers. However I am 63 years old and disabled. I collect disability from Social Security. Am I eligible for Silver Sneakers if I'm only 63 but disabled?

You would have to check with SilverSneakers directly. Our site,, really focuses on helping seniors research, purchase, and understand insurance that supplements Medicare. If you and your husband have coverage through his work that would be beyond our scope of expertise.

Can you pay a fee to join Silver Sneakers if your supplement doesn't offer it? So many of the senior community would benefit. Why ignore other plans? All seniors deserve access to these programs to maintain their health which would seemingly reduce insurance costs.

Our understanding is that Silver Sneakers does not accept direct payment if your supplemental plan does not offer it. You have to join a medical plan to get Silver Sneakers.

I just got Silver Sneakers and signed up at two gyms today, but I'm uneasy about the liable waivers I had to sign in order to join. In light of TPL, I'm afraid that I'd be responsible for medical bills if I'm hurt at a gym, and it is determined that the gym is responsible. I've been searching online for a definitive answer to this with little luck. Does anyone know for sure about this?

It looks like Anthem Plans G & F do not include Silver Sneakers in California. I thought they did, but they're not listed on either the Silver Sneakers site or on the Anthem site. It looks like Anthem is now only offering Silver Sneakers to those with Medicare Advantage.

As of today, Anthem is offering silver sneakers in California with plan A, N, F andInnovative F plan.

Please let us know if you are interested in enrolling

Thank you, Chris. I'm not sure Silver Sneakers is worth it after all, so I'm completely rethinking things. There are plenty of options for exercise that do not require a gym.

You are welcome. Please contact us if you have any additional questions or you need help enrolling in a plan.

Does anyone know what companies are dropping Silver Sneakers for their supplements in California? I know Silver Sneakers has dropped it in some areas. A poster on another site said UCH is dropping Silver Sneakers nationwide for all plans effective 1/1/2018, but I don't where the person got that info and have been unable to confirm one way or the other.
Does anyone in California? Have you received anything in writing to this effect?
I'm considering UCH for my supplement, and Silver Sneakers is part of the equation. (I know SS can be discontinued at any time, but if it is definitely dropping it, I'd prefer to go with a different carrier.)

You are correct that anyone offering Silver Sneakers is able to drop it at any time. We have not received a notification that any insurance carrier is planning on removing Silver Sneakers nationwide. If you would evidence that it will remain in California, please contact us at and we can research and provide that .

Finally, we are able to help you enroll in your plan of choice at the guaranteed lowest price at no charge to you.

I just got a silver sneakers membership thru my advantage plan. i am 55 and disabled. i can't go to a gym by myself, and always have my wife with me. is there a way to add her to my silver sneakers membership ? or am i allowed to bring a guest when i go ? my wife is only 43 but she has health issues as well, waiting for her disability review.

Your Silver Sneakers fitness program is only for the Medicare beneficiary who is enrolled in a participating Medicare health plan that offers the gym membership as an additional benefit. You may want to consider asking your gym if they will offer a special deal to your wife. When she is Medicare eligible have her give our Senior65 licensed independent insurance agents a call at 800-930-7956, and we can help her find the right plan for her.

If you have a supplemental plan that covers Silver Sneakers membership, are you limited to just one facility? I split my year between two states and would be interested in a membership in each.

With a Silver Sneakers membership you have access to all of the 13,000 gyms and facilities. You can go to one gym in the morning and a different gym that night. So, feel free to go workout at anywhere you want!

It is ridiculous that we have to pay for Medicare, Medigap supplement, a prescription plan as well as an annual deductible with plan G and cannot have Silver Sneakers. It seems as though I have worked my entire life to be penalized and watch others take advantage of reduced transportation, medicine, link and other benefits. Where are the perks for people who chose to work? I am being penalized and discriminated against by the "good old" government. How about being fair to all Seniors?

Ms. B,
We know this change can be frustrating. But there's good news: You don't have to enroll in a Medicare Supplement -there are other less expensive montlhy options for seniors. If you choose to have a Medicare Supplement and want Silver Sneakers, we can help you find a Plan G that offers it in your area. To learn more about your options call one of our licensed independent insurance agents at 800-930-7956.

Today during our Silver Sneakers class, a lady, who moved from Florida, mentioned that her insurance company sends her a check at the end of the year for each day she attends silver sneakers class. Is this so?

Totally Discriminatory! - All 5 of my Doctors say to continue going to the YMCA , and I go at 5:00 each morning 4-5 days per week. - But, can no longer afford it. A YMCA grant each 6-months covers $half,- but I still pay $23 per month, and an average of $50 per month $Gas! - The Federal government and Medicare should NOT Discriminate, and be against regular exercise at the YMCA. - Yet We are still freated unfairly. - Such a JOKE. - nd Congress needs to get this FIXED Immediately!! - Silver Sneakers is only for the privileged few with special plans. - - Unconstitutional & Congress promotes Non-Exercise. - da!?

Are there any Florida medigap insurance cos that allow an insured to purchase an additional "fitness rider" that would include Silver Sneakers? Will Silver Sneakers be expanding any more in Fla in the near future?

While we think it would be a fantastic idea to have a fitness rider, as far as we know, there is not one available. To the second part of your question, it is possible more companies will add Silver Sneakers in the future, but we have no knowledge of that, at this time.

I turned 65 in April of this year and live in Ohio and I want to know if I can change my medicare supplement Plan G with Omaha Insurance to a different plan G policy that offers the Silver Sneakers. Can you do that as if I can it will save me on my classes I take at the gym.

We hear you! Silver Sneakers offers some great benefits. Only thing, since you have passed your Medigap enrollment period, you can apply but you more than likely will have to answer medical questions to enroll in a different Medigap plan. Remember that you shouldn't cancel your current Medigap policy before you are given are approved and given an effective date for another Medigap policy.

I have a Human Medicare Advantage plan now, but wish to change to a Medigap plan. I am in Florida. cannot get a simple answer as to what plans make it available. Please advise.

It looks like there are two separate parts to your question, so I've separated them. You can apply for a Medigap plan up to two months before your Medicare Advantage plan expires (most exp 12/31). Remember, you'll have to answer medical questions if you don't have a guaranteed issuance period.

If you're looking for Medigap plans that include Silver Sneakers programs in Florida, it looks like the only one that we are assigned with is Humana. You'll want to double check, though, with each company to make sure they are including Silver Sneakers at the time of enrollment, as things can change.
