A Medigap policy generally keeps paying claims the same way after you move to a new state, since Medicare Supplement plans have no provider networks tying coverage to a specific area. That said, moving can still affect what you pay and whether you’re able to switch to a cheaper plan once you get there. Here’s what actually changes, what doesn’t, and when a move is worth using as a reason to shop around.

Does Your Medigap Policy Move With You When You Relocate?

Yes. According to Medicare.gov, you can keep your current Medigap policy no matter where you live, as long as you still have Original Medicare. Source: Medicare.gov. You don’t have to notify Medicare, re-enroll, or requalify for the plan just because you packed up and moved to a new state. This is one of the few areas where Medicare Supplement (the formal name for Medigap) is simpler than people expect.

Your policy stays in force, your benefits stay the same, and your insurance company can’t cancel you just because your address changed. The only thing that requires action on your part is updating your mailing address with your carrier, so premium notices and any plan correspondence actually reach you. More on premiums later.

Why Medigap Has No State or Network Restrictions

Medigap plans have no network of doctors (any doctor that accept Medicare must accept them) and they are the secondary payer to Medicare. Because Medigap simply pays after Original Medicare processes a claim, it’s extremely portable. Since Medigap works with any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare, not a limited network tied to your ZIP code so it goes with you when you move.

That’s the appeal for people who split time between states, snowbird part of the year, or move to be closer to family in retirement: you’re not gambling on whether your specific doctor or hospital is in-network in a new city. If they take Medicare, your Medigap plan works there too.

Will Your Premium Change After You Move?

Usually yes, and this is where movers get caught off guard. Medigap premiums are priced by state, and sometimes by county or ZIP code within a state, since local claims costs and state regulations vary. Depending on your carrier’s rules, a move to a new state can trigger a rate change even though your plan was purchased in your old state. Some will charge you the rate of your new zipcode , some will charge you the old local rate. Once company splits the difference between the two locations. If you purchased your plan in a big state like California and then move, they may change your rate to price they charge in their most expensive zip code in California. Makes no sense but we have seen that here at Senior65.com.

💡 Tip: Call your Medigap carrier before you move and ask directly what your monthly premium would be at your new address. There’s no universal answer, so this is a five-minute phone call worth making before moving day.

Can You Switch to a Different Medigap Plan in Your New State?

Moving states by itself doesn’t grant you a guaranteed issue right the way turning 65 or losing employer coverage does. If you want to switch carriers or plans outside your original Medigap Open Enrollment Period, the new insurance company in your new state can generally ask health questions and use medical underwriting to decide whether to accept you.

That’s not as discouraging as it sounds. Anyone can apply for medical underwriting to switch Medigap plans at any time of year, and a pre-existing condition doesn’t automatically disqualify you, but every carrier weighs your health history differently. Before applying, it’s worth checking the Instant Medigap Underwriting Checker to see what kinds of questions they will ask.

If you happen to be moving into one of the states with a Medigap Birthday Rule, you’ll also get an annual window around your birthday to switch plans without underwriting. Unfortunately if you move away from a state that had the birthday rule, you lose your previous switching right moving forward.

Our Switching Medigap Plans guide and Medicare Insurance Switching: Ultimate Guide both go into more detail on state-specific guaranteed issue options if underwriting isn’t the right fit for you. Remember some states like New York allow for year round switching.

What Happens to Medicare Advantage When You Move?

Moving out of a Medicare Advantage plan’s service area typically ends your coverage in that plan entirely. Movers usually have to re-shop MA plans from scratch in the new area, and the available carriers, networks, and drug formularies can look completely different a few counties over.

A Note on Medicare SELECT Policies

Medicare SELECT is a lower-cost version of Medigap that does use a limited network for non-emergency care. Senior65 has never sold this policy because of its limitations. If you have a Medicare SELECT policy and move out of its service area, federal law gives you a real guaranteed issue right: you can switch to a standardized Medigap Plan A, B, C, D, F, or G from your current company (no medical questions if you’ve held the SELECT policy more than six months), or shop a new company in your new state, generally within 60 days before or 63 days after your SELECT coverage ends. Source: Medicare.gov. Most Med Sup policyholders don’t have SELECT plans, but if you do, this is the one scenario where moving states genuinely unlocks guaranteed issue on its own.

Before You Move, Check These Three Things

  • Call your current Medigap carrier to ask whether your premium changes with your billing address, and update your address once you know your move-in date.
  • Check whether your new state has a Birthday Rule or other guaranteed issue window worth timing your switch around.
  • Run a quick Medigap quote comparison for your new address. Since pricing is regional, the same plan letter can cost noticeably more or less in your new state.
