93% of Medigap policyholders report being satisfied with their supplemental coverage, one of the highest satisfaction rates of any senior health insurance product. That number has held above 90% in member surveys year after year, even as premiums rise.

Medigap (also called Medicare Supplement insurance) works alongside Original Medicare to cover much of what Parts A and B leave behind. The high satisfaction isn’t an accident. It comes from a few specific things Medigap does well, and a few headaches it avoids. Here is what the data shows and why so many members stay happy.

What the Latest Medigap Satisfaction Surveys Show

AHIP’s latest State of Medicare Supplement Coverage report (April 2026) found that 93% of seniors are satisfied with their Medicare Supplement plan, and 80% say they are very or extremely satisfied. The same research found that 83% rate the value of their coverage as excellent or good, and 96% agree that Medigap lets them see the doctors and specialists they know and trust without worrying too much about out-of-pocket costs. The financial peace of mind shows up in the data too. Medicare enrollees with a Medsupp plan were about half as likely to report problems paying medical bills as those in Original Medicare without supplemental coverage (under 3% versus more than 6%, based on 2023 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey data). Satisfaction this high, this consistently, is rare in health coverage.

Why Are So Many Medigap Members Satisfied?

Predictable, Capped Out-of-Pocket Costs

With a plan like Medigap Plan G, you pay your monthly premium and the annual Part B deductible ($283), and the plan covers nearly everything else Medicare-approved. There are no surprise bills after a hospital stay or a major procedure. For people on a fixed retirement income, that predictability is often the single biggest reason they stay satisfied.

Freedom to See Any Doctor That Accepts Medicare

Medigap has no networks. You can see any doctor or specialist in the country who accepts Original Medicare (the large majority do), with no referral required. Members who travel, split the year between two states, or want to keep a trusted specialist tend to value this more than anything else.

No Referrals and No Prior Authorization

Original Medicare with a Medigap plan generally does not require prior authorization for covered services. Your doctor orders the care and Medicare plus your supplement pay their share. Not waiting on an insurer to approve a scan or a procedure removes one of the most common sources of frustration in health coverage.

Standardized Plans You Can Compare Apples-to-Apples

Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government, so a Plan G from one insurance company covers exactly the same benefits as a Plan G from another. The only real difference is price and, to a much lesser extent, the company’s service. That makes it easy to shop without worrying you missed a hidden gap, and it is why a Plan G can cost more from one company than another for identical coverage.

Guaranteed Renewable Coverage

A Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable. As long as you pay the premium, the insurer cannot drop you or cut your benefits because of your age or a new health condition. Members know the coverage will be there when they actually need it.

How Does Medigap Satisfaction Compare to Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage has a different ranking system and scored 623 on a 1,000-point scale in 2025 (Source: J.D. Power). Retirement Living says 71% were satisfied with their MA plan in April 2026. More than half (55%) of eligible Medicare beneficiaries are now enrolled in Medicare Advantage. Source: KFF. Medicare Advantage often costs less up front and bundles in extras, but the everyday experience is different from Medigap in two ways that show up in member satisfaction.

First, prior authorization. Medicare Advantage insurers made nearly 53 million prior authorization determinations in 2024, meaning members frequently need plan approval before getting care. Source: KFF. Original Medicare with Medigap rarely works that way. Second, doctor access: Medicare Advantage enrollees have access to roughly half the physicians available to people in Original Medicare, because Advantage plans use networks. Source: KFF.

We typically don’t sell Medicare Advantage, and we believe Medigap is a superior product for most seniors who can afford it. That said, Medicare Advantage has a real advantage worth naming: most MA plans include Part D drug coverage at no extra premium, while Medigap members buy a standalone Part D plan separately. (Senior65 doesn’t sell Part D; we explain how it works and recommend enrolling directly at Medicare.gov.) For a fuller breakdown, see our Medicare Advantage vs Medigap comparison.

Does Medigap Satisfaction Hold Up When You Get Sick?

The real test of any Medicare coverage is a bad health year, not a healthy one. This is where Medigap satisfaction tends to climb rather than fall. When a member faces a hospitalization, surgery, cancer treatment, or repeated specialist visits, a plan like Med Sup Plan G means the bills stay predictable and the choice of provider stays open. People who rarely use care may not notice the difference, but those who get seriously ill are often the most grateful they had a supplement.

💡 Tip: If you are weighing coverage while healthy, picture how each option would feel during a year with a major diagnosis. That scenario is where the differences between Medigap and other coverage become real.

Not Happy With Your Current Plan? How to Switch to Medigap

If you are in a plan you are not satisfied with, you usually can switch to Medigap through medical underwriting, and you can apply at any time of year. Underwriting means the insurer reviews your health history before approving you, but qualifying is possible even with pre-existing conditions. There is no guarantee of approval, so it is worth checking your situation before applying using our Senior65 Instant Medigap Underwriting Checker.

A handful of states also offer Birthday Rule or annual guaranteed-issue windows that let you switch from one Medigap plan to another without underwriting. These are a useful bonus if you happen to qualify, but they are secondary to the underwriting path and typically apply only when moving Medigap-to-Medigap. You can read more in our Birthday Rule state guide and our overview of switching Medigap plans.
