Utah Medigap Birthday Rule makes it easier for Utah residents with Medicare Supplement coverage to switch their plans. Each year around your birthday, you now have the chance to change Medigap plans without going through medical underwriting. Let’s break down how it works.

What is the Utah Medigap Birthday Rule?

Utah Medigap Birthday Rule introduces a welcome change for Medicare beneficiaries in the Beehive State. If you cannot switch your current Medsupp plan due to pre-existing health issues, this new rule gives you a 60-day window to switch to a plan with equal or fewer benefits with your same insurance provider —with guaranteed approval. That means no health questions, no medical exams as long as you follow the rules below.

How Does the Utah Medigap Birthday Rule Work?

With the passage of H.B. 258 Medicare Supplement Insurance Amendments in 2025, the Utah Legislature has officially added more flexibility to Medigap coverage in the state. This new law puts Utah in a small but growing group of states that offer Medicare beneficiaries a guaranteed chance to adjust their plans each year.

Each year, starting on your birthday, you have 60 days to pick a different Medigap Plan with your current company.

Here are three important points to keep in mind:

1) Which Insurer Can I Choose?

The law specifies that you can only switch to a different plan with the same insurance provider. Note: you can always change insurance companies, but you will have to go through a medical review, and they may not approve your application. If this is your situation, check out our Medigap Underwriting Page. If you need help, you can contact the Senior65.com team at 800-930-7956 or leave a comment below, and we’ll get in touch to help you for free.

2) What Kind of Plan Can I Switch to?

You’re only allowed to switch to a plan that offers the same or fewer benefits. For example, Plan G is very popular because it covers almost everything. If you’re looking to save money, you might move to Plan N, which skips the excess charges and has small copays.

3) Can I be Declined for Health Reasons?

Nope. The big thing about this new rule is that insurance companies can’t deny you enrollment based on your health. As long as you stay with the same insurer and pick a plan that fits the rules, you’re guaranteed approval. No health questions, no medical checks. (Source: Utah State Legislature)

Why Would Someone Want to Switch Plans With the Same Company?

The majority of people who will use this plan will go from Plan F to Plan G. Since Plan F is currently closed to those new to Medicare, many have seen their price increase. Switching to Plan G with the same company, can save money even after paying the part B deductible of $257. (Plan F covers the Part B deductible but Plan G does not.)

Rarely, a Medigap insurance provider will offer a second version of your exact same lettered plan but at a lower price. If this ever happens, you have the right to switch to it- no health questions asked.

The final reason would be those who find plan G too expensive. Medigap Plan N offered by your current Medigap plan can often have a lower monthly premium in exchange for you taking on copays and excess charges.
