Brief Overview of Medigap

Medicare covers a lot, but medicare supplemental insurance fills in the gaps. There are plans that fit every need from basic to very comprehensive. Here is a quick comparison of the two most popular plans: Medigap A and Medigap F.

Basic Supplemental Plan A:

Medigap Plan A covers the first three pints of blood of a transfusion, Part B coinsurance, Hospice and Hospitalization coinsurance and copays, and adds an additional 365 hospitalization days. You will still be responsible for Medicare’s Part A and B deductibles and Skilled Nursing coinsurance.

Comprehensive Plan F:

Medigap Plan F covers everything that Plan A does, but also covers both Part A and B’s deductibles, Skilled Nursing coinsurance, and Part B excess charges. Plan F has an added benefit of covering foreign emergency healthcare when you travel outside of the U.S.

This comprehensive Medigap plan also is offered with a high deductible, known as High-F. This plans covers everything that the traditional Medigap Plan F covers but with a deductible of $2,140 for 2014.
