Medicare has specific requirements to qualify for eligibility. We have listed the circumstances to become a Medicare beneficiary.

Medicare Eligibility 65 and Over

You are eligible for Medicare when you turn 65 if:

  • You are a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident; AND
  • You or your spouse* has worked long enough to be eligible for Social Security or railroad retirement benefits; OR
  • You or your spouse works/worked for the government and has not paid into Social Security but has paid Medicare payroll taxes while working

*If you don’t personally qualify for benefits but your spouse does they must be at least 62 for you to be eligible for Medicare.

Medicare Eligibility Under 65

You are eligible for Medicare if your are under 65 if:

  • You are a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident and have paid into Medicare; AND
  • You have been entitled to Disability benefits for 24 months; OR
  • You have Lou Gehrig’s disease; OR
  • You have End Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure)

Same-Sex Married Couples Requirements

Same sex married couples are legally allowed to sign up for Medicare under their spouses accounts as long as the state in which they live in recognizes same-sex marriage.
