Medicare Open Enrollment Options
During Open Enrollment Medicare, the period that runs from October 15 through December 7, seniors are able to switch from their Original Medicare plan to a Medicare Advantage plan, and vice versa. It is important to remember this does not mean this period is open game for Medigap plans. Medigap plans, in most states, have a one time open enrollment or Medicare Supplemental Special Enrollment Period (SEP).
Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage
The choice is really up to you. If you are on a tight budget MA plans offer great benefits like gym membership, Rx coverage, dental and vision -generally at no extra cost, but with a limited network. While Medicare doesn’t offer these extra benefits it does have the largest nationwide network, and if you have a little extra money each month a Medicare, Medigap*, Rx combo might be the right choice for you.
* AEP Open Enrollment (October 15 to December 7) doesn’t apply to Medigap. As an existing Medigap plan beneficiary, if you’re considering transitioning to another plan, know that you have the freedom to make this change whenever you wish. Keep in mind that this transition may involve submitting a new application and providing medical information for approval.
