What to Consider When Purchasing Medigap Plans

It is important to note when selecting Medicare Supplement Plans, you want to focus on two things:

1) Which Plan is Right for You.
Most people go for plan F but it might not be right for you. Since you live in CA you are allowed to switch to a equal or lower benefit plan during the month of your birthday. If you are not sure which plan to pick, go for the one that offers the most benefits because you can always “downgrade” later.

2) Price
When comparing Medigap providers, consider price. Since all lettered plans are identical in benefits, it’s ok to select the least expensive plan.  So Anthem’s Medigap F plan is exactly equal to Aetna’s Medigap F by law. Only difference is price.

Remember: Anthem offers a “new to Medicare” discount of $20 off per month for your first year.

what is CASUPWPO CA Modernized Plan F. How is it different from Plan F?

Lynn,
Our understanding is the Modernized Plan F is exactly the same as regular Plan F. There are new Plan F's that have additional benefits but they have different names. Please check our article that breaks down every new Plan F variant in CA

Does Plan F OR Medicare cover routine lab blood work performed in an approved facility?

Barbara,
Remember Medigap Plan F fills in the gaps of Original Medicare. So, if your lab blood work is covered by Medicare (and it most likely should be), Plan F will pick up the rest of the cost. The reason we can't say it's with 100% certainty your test is covered is: maybe most of your lab work is covered, but your doctor wants to run a test that isn't covered, so therefore that part of test will not be covered by Medicare or F. To learn if a specific service is covered you will want to contact Medicare directly.

If you need help finding a Medigap plan in your area call one of our Senior65 licensed independent insurance agents at 800-930-7956.

I recently received a bill from the lab for routine blood work for over $700. I paid nothing last year. If Medicare doesn't cover 100%, doesn't Anthem Blue Cross Plan N pick up anything not covered by Medicare?

Vicki,
Medicare covers 100% of the costs of medically necessary diagnostic lab work (urinalysis, blood work, etc.) done at an approved facility. To answer your question, if Medicare doesn't cover it, then Plan N won't cover it. You will need to contact Medicare directly to find out if the service wasn't covered or if the facility offering the service wasn't covered or they charged Part B excess charges (). To switch to a Medigap plan that covers excess charges call one of our Senior65 licensed independent insurance agents at 800-930-7956.

If I choose plan F, and medicare part D , when I go to the clinic to get my Remicade infusion (every 8 weeks) does the plan cover for the service fee at the clinic ?

Hue Mihh Ngo,
If Medicare deems the Remicade infusion medically necessary, then Part B will cover its part, and your Plan F will cover the rest. Hope this helps!
