Medigap Plan G High Deductible (often called High G) covers the same benefits as standard Plan G once you meet a deductible of $2,950 in 2026. In exchange for that deductible, the monthly premium is usually a fraction of what standard Plan G costs. Unlike High Deductible Plan F, High G is available to anyone, including people new to Medicare. For many people, it costs less over a full year than standard Plan G, even in a year when they meet the entire deductible.

Medigap Plan G High Deductible Overview

High Deductible Plan G is one of the standardized Medicare Supplement Insurance plans. Medigap plans are regulated, so every insurance company that offers High G must offer the exact same benefits. The only differences between carriers are price, service, and discounts.

Medigap plans are designed to work alongside Original Medicare Part A and Part B. With Medigap High G, you pay Medicare-covered costs (deductibles, coinsurance, and copays) until you reach $2,950 for the calendar year. After that, the plan pays everything standard Plan G pays for the rest of the year. Your Part B deductible counts toward the high deductible. Source: Medicare.gov.

Note: If you became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, you can also look at High Deductible Plan F. It has the same deductible as High G and also covers the Part B deductible once the deductible is met.

**Skilled nursing facility care requires a 3-day qualifying inpatient hospital stay.

***Foreign travel emergency coverage has its own $250 deductible, applies to emergencies in the first 60 days of a trip, and has a $50,000 lifetime limit.

****You must meet the plan’s $2,950 deductible before coverage kicks in.

What Are the Benefits of Medigap High Deductible Plan G?

Can Medigap High G Cost Less Even If You Meet the Deductible?

Often, yes. The premium gap between standard G and High G can be large, especially in states with higher Medigap rates. For example, in New York, standard Plan G may cost about $350 a month while High G may cost about $60 a month. Here is how a full year compares:

New York Example Standard Plan G High Deductible Plan G
Monthly premium $350 $60
Yearly premium $4,200 $720
Most you pay for Medicare-covered care in a year $283 (Part B deductible) $2,950 (includes the Part B deductible)
Worst-case yearly total $4,200 + $283 $720 + $2,950

In this example, High G still costs less than standard G in a year when you meet the full deductible. In a year with only routine care, you keep most of the $3,480 premium difference. Premiums vary by carrier and ZIP code, so check your own numbers with a Medigap quote for your area.

Do You Have to Pay 100% of Your Costs Until You Reach the Deductible?

No. Medicare still pays its share while you work toward the High G deductible. After you pay the Part B deductible ($283), Medicare pays 80% of Medicare-approved outpatient costs and you pay 20%. Only your 20% counts toward the high deductible.

For example, on a $200 Medicare-approved specialist visit (after your Part B deductible), Medicare pays $160 and you pay $40. To reach the $2,950 deductible through doctor visits, tests, and outpatient care alone, you would need close to five times that amount in Medicare-approved charges for the year.

Will You Reach the High G Deductible Every Year?

Many years, you may not. People with routine checkups, a few specialist visits, and lab work often pay little beyond the Part B deductible. A hospital stay is the most common way to reach it, because the Part A deductible ($1,736) counts toward the high deductible. Your Part D drug costs are separate and don’t count toward it. Can You Switch From High G to Standard Plan G Later?

Outside of New York and a few other states, moving from High G to standard G usually requires medical underwriting. You can apply to switch Medigap plans at any time of year. A pre-existing condition doesn’t automatically disqualify you, but every carrier weighs your history differently, so check your odds with the Instant Medigap Underwriting Checker before applying. Some states also have a Birthday Rule, though these rules often limit you to equal or lesser coverage. For more, see our guide to switching Medigap plans.

Who Should Consider Medigap High Deductible Plan G?

  • People in good health who mostly use routine and preventive care
  • Anyone in a state where the premium gap between standard G and High G is large
  • Those who can cover the deductible from savings in a bad year
  • New Yorkers who want the lowest premium and the option to switch plans later

If you’d rather never see a medical bill beyond the Part B deductible, standard G may fit better. Compare both in Medigap Plan G vs High-Deductible Plan G.
