Most people will be eligible for Medicare at 65, however when their coverage begins may vary.

Medicare Coverage Begins

Here are the dates when your Medicare coverage begins for Original Medicare, Prescription Drug Coverage, and/or Medicare Advantage if you sign up:

  • 3 months before your 65th birth month: 1st day of your 65th birth month*
  • The month of your 65th birth month: the month after you sign up
  • 1 month after your 65th birth month: 2 months after you sign up
  • 2 months after your 65th birth month: 3 months after you sign up
  • 3 months after your 65th birth month: 3 months after you sign up
  • During general enrollment: July 1st

*If your birthday falls on the 1st of a month your coverage will begin on the first day of the month that came before. Ex. If you’re birthday is February 1st, your Medicare coverage would begin January 1st.

Medigap Coverage Begins

If you sign up for Medigap, aka Medicare Supplement (Med Supp), during your guaranteed issuance period your coverage usually begins the 1st day of the following month.
