Many of our clients ask us to help them switch from Medigap Plan F to Medigap Plan G. We can do this and have done this hundreds of times.

The reason is simple: Plan G is less expensive than F and there is speculation that because of the Changes in Medicare Supplement plans in 2020, the prices of Plan F will increase significantly. While nothing is yet certain, switching to Plan G is worth considering.

What is the difference between Medigap Plan G and Plan F?

Apart from the price of each plan there is only one difference in benefits: the Part B deductible. Medigap Plan F does cover the Part B deductible of $240, while Medigap Plan G does not. Other than that, they cover exactly the same benefits and access the exact same network.

Two Reasons to switch from Plan F to G

1) Plan G is a better deal right now.

Plan G is often considerably less expensive than Plan F. You can often save $50 a month moving from F to G. Even though you will have to pay the one time $240 for the Part B deductible on Medigap G, the monthly savings will be worth it in the long run.

2) Plan G will be a better deal in the future.

As Plan F closes to those new to Medicare in 2020, its pool of members will be older than those on Medigap G. The speculation is that Plan F’s older members will use more health services which will drive up the cost of the plan. Therefore, many people think G will be significantly less expensive in the long run.

While we don’t know future prices, the logic is compelling. Bottom line: Plan G is a better deal now and will probably be so in the future. If you can save money switching to G, you should consider it.
